janegodzilla: (gettin' my hot cocoa on)

I'm a wee bit buzzed on Peet's coffee (omgYUM), so instead of making a post with actual content, I'm going to ramble about books for a while. Because I can. Ahahaha!

I've been a reading fiend of late, because a lot of books I'd put on hold at the library started arriving and I'm trying to be good about reading and returning them before they're due. Usually, I'm terrible about that, and put it off until the library starts calling and/or emailing me with vague threats of what will happen if I don't give the damn books back. Library Mafia, y'all. Scary stuff.

Anyway.

I just finished "Geek Love" and "Heart-Shaped Box," and was delighted with both, "Geek Love" in particular. I found out about it when I was reading some book or another on circus freaks (I go through weird phases when it comes to nonfiction) and the author was absolutely moony over it, so I thought I'd give it a try. And...wow. The story is about a family of circus freaks, but what drives the story isn't the freakishness of the people involved, but the fucked-up family dynamic, which is horrifying and fascinating and heartbreaking all at once. And maybe I'm just a sucker for stuff like that, but I couldn't put it down until I'd finished it. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I like 'em crazy, and the more screwed-up, the better. "Geek Love" definitely goes on the "to-buy" list. ♥

"Heart-Shaped Box" was good too, although I wish I hadn't known that the author was Stephen King's son, because I wanted to judge the book on its own merits and not compare Hill's writing to his dad's. But I still enjoyed it a great deal -- it was a fun, creepy ride and I ended up liking the main characters more than I thought I would. I look forward to seeing what he writes next.

As for what I should read next...ehhhhhIdon'tknow. I sort of want to reread "World War Z" or Stephen King's "Everything's Eventual" collection, but I'm also in a nonfiction mood and want to pick up more Stephen Ambrose. Or reread "Dr. Strangelove's America." Or...gah. Why can't I have, like, five sets of eyes so I can read all of them at once?
